Russia, Crimea, Putin

Since the Olympics in Sochi, Russia, ended there have been a big buzz about how Putin is ready to claim the Crimea from Ukraine. I know that I talked to my family back home in Sweden where they slowly started to realize that it, once again, is time to put more resources in to our military defense. No one can ever tell what is going on in President Putins head.
In this article from New York Times, they have interviewed people from Russia and Ukraine. People from Russia thinks that Putin wants to restore the Soviet Union and the parts of eastern Europe that belonged to Soviet before 1954 should once again belong to Russia.
I think this is madness. Aren't we supposed to move forward instead of backwards. I can't think of anyone that wants to go back to the time of WW2. A couple of weeks ago I also read (possibly at the Swedish news site aftonbladet.se) that the Cold War never ended in roughly 1989-1990 it's still going on, which I honestly, is starting to believe as well. In this world, it's all about the country that has the most power, and frankly, Russia has never really had it, so of course Putin is going hard at it to make that happen.
Now, many people from Crimea talks about how they belong more to Russia than to Ukraine, and that it is stupid that Ukraine won't let that part of the country become "independent" (well, be a part of Russia). Even though, Russia don't have the right to invade Ukraine with military etc..

At this moment, there are a lot of demonstrations, both in Russia and Ukraine, and from an outer perspective it seems to be a big risk of a minor war between the countries. And my question is, when is the world police (USA) going to walk in and "fix" the problem?
